Quota Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 October 2026 · applies to Quota 1.16 and later
Quota is a Mac app that shows how much of your AI tools' usage limits you have used. It is made by Johan Koller Stefanes, Schönauring 64, 8052 Zürich, Switzerland ("I", "me"), who is responsible for the processing described here. You can reach me at hi@johanstefanes.ch.
Quota comes in two editions: Quota, downloaded from this website, and Quota Lite, from the Mac App Store. Where they differ, this policy says so.
This policy follows the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, for people in the EU and EEA, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The short version
- Quota has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. I don't collect anything about you or about how you use the app.
- Your usage data, sign-ins and sessions stay on your Mac. A sign-in is only ever sent to the provider it belongs to, to ask that provider for your usage.
- Everything Quota remembers (settings, the last readings, your plan check history) is stored on your Mac only.
- The only personal data I receive is what you give when you buy Quota from this website (through Lemon Squeezy) or email me.
What Quota reads on your Mac
To show a provider's usage, Quota reads the sign-in that tool already keeps on your Mac and uses it only to ask that same provider for your usage. You choose which providers are on in Settings → Accounts.
| Provider | What Quota reads |
|---|---|
| Claude | Claude Code's session files in ~/.claude; in Quota (not Lite) also Claude Code's sign-in in your login Keychain, which macOS asks your permission for first, and Claude Desktop's local cache |
| Codex | ~/.codex/auth.json and Codex's local session files |
| Gemini and related tools | Gemini CLI's and related tools' local files and logs (token counts only) |
| Cursor, Antigravity, GitHub Copilot, Grok, Kimi, OpenCode, Command Code, Devin/Windsurf, GLM, Kiro | Quota only: each tool's local sign-in file, database, Keychain item or command-line tool |
| DeepSeek, Qianwen, MiniMax | Quota only: a sign-in you make yourself inside Quota's own browser window, kept in Quota's own storage |
| Ollama, LM Studio | Your local Ollama or LM Studio server on this Mac |
| API keys you enter | Kept in Quota's own items in your Keychain |
To show whether an agent is working or waiting for you, Quota also reads those tools' local session files on your Mac.
Quota never uploads these files or sign-ins anywhere else and keeps no copies of them outside your Mac.
Quota Lite runs in Apple's App Sandbox. It can only read your home folder after you allow it to, and then only read it. It cannot read other apps' Keychain items, start other tools or change their settings.
Quota (not Lite) can also, if you turn these on:
- Approve from the notch: add one hook entry to Claude Code's
~/.claude/settings.json(keeping a one-time backup beside it). The hook sends each permission request (the tool, its command or file, and the project folder) to Quota on your own Mac over a local, token-protected connection. It never leaves your Mac. Turning the setting off removes the entry. - Refresh a sign-in by running the provider's own command-line tool that is already installed on your Mac, such as
claude. That tool then talks to its provider as it always does. - Bring a terminal forward: with your permission, ask Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty or cmux to show the tab of the session you click.
Network connections
- AI providers: only the ones you have switched on, only to fetch your usage, and only with your own sign-in. What those providers do with the request is covered by their own privacy policies.
- Updates (Quota only): about once a day Quota asks
johanstefanes.github.io/quota-updates/appcast.xml, hosted by GitHub, for a new version. As usual for the Sparkle update framework, the request carries the app's version and your macOS version, and GitHub sees your IP address. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings → General. Quota Lite is updated by the Mac App Store instead. - Licensing (Quota only): when you activate, check or deactivate a license, Quota sends your license key and your Mac's name to Lemon Squeezy at
api.lemonsqueezy.com. - Purchases in Quota Lite: the free trial and the purchase go through the Mac App Store. Quota Lite only learns from macOS which of the two you have and when you got them. Nothing goes to me.
Buying Quota
From this website: Lemon Squeezy (Lemon Squeezy LLC, USA) sells Quota as the merchant of record and handles payment, invoicing and tax. I receive your name, email address, country and order details from Lemon Squeezy to provide your license and support. I never see your card details. Lemon Squeezy's privacy policy applies to the purchase itself: lemonsqueezy.com/privacy.
From the Mac App Store: Apple handles the purchase. I don't receive your name or email address, only anonymous sales reports. Apple's privacy policy applies: apple.com/legal/privacy.
I keep purchase records for as long as Swiss law requires for business records (up to ten years) and otherwise only as long as needed to provide your license and support. The legal bases are the performance of our contract and my legal obligations (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b) and (c)).
If you email me, I use your address and message only to answer you, and I delete them once they are no longer needed for that. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in answering you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
This website
The website is hosted by Vercel (Vercel Inc., USA). It loads its animation library from jsDelivr and, for the checkout, a script from Lemon Squeezy. Like any web server, Vercel and these services see your IP address and browser details when you load a page, and Vercel keeps them briefly in its server logs for operation and security. The website sets no cookies of its own and uses no analytics. Lemon Squeezy's checkout may set cookies it needs for payment when you open it. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in running the website (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
Transfers abroad
Lemon Squeezy, Vercel, GitHub and jsDelivr's providers are based in the USA. Where your data goes there, the transfer relies on the Swiss–US and EU–US Data Privacy Frameworks or on standard contractual clauses.
Your rights
You can ask me what personal data I hold about you, and have it corrected, deleted, restricted or handed to you in a portable format, and you can object to its processing. Email hi@johanstefanes.ch.
You can also complain to a supervisory authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in the EU the authority of your country.
Removing Quota's data from your Mac
- Switch any provider off in Settings → Accounts.
- Quota: delete the app and its preferences (
~/Library/Preferences/com.johankoller.quota.plist), and its items in Keychain Access (search for "quota"). - Quota Lite: delete the app; its data lives in
~/Library/Containers/com.johankoller.quota.lite, which macOS removes with it.
Changes
If Quota starts handling data differently, I will update this policy and the date at the top before that version ships.
